Wow, very nice. I met a guy this past weekend at the Vintage Festival who races one of those. His other bike? An 883 Sportster. Guys will race anything with wheels and an engine.

EVERYTHING at the Vintage Festival was LOUD. Three Rudges rode past me in the paddock while I was talking to someone and the vibration from the roar was jiggling the change in my pocket. Not at all an unpleasant experience - um, the roar that is.

Ya the buell is nice. She really loves it, not to tall very well balanced but being a 500 single its got a lot of low end torque. She has gotten very good with it though, better then me I snap my head back everytime I shift a gear on it.

My 2005 Suzuki GS500F (photo taken in front of the Mojo headquarters in Barrie, ON.)
The 'F' stands for fairing, when I bought the bike in 2008 it did have the full front fairings, but I decided a couple years ago that running into a deer and letting the pavement customize my bike was an equally good look.

What do you think of the Wing? I've ridden an '82 for years, but then got on to an HD, but now think it's time to get back on an 1800. I want to go to Alaska some day, and know I won't be able to do it on my Ultra.

Here's one of my personal rides - at least it is for now - a 2008 KTM 690 Enduro. I'm just getting prepared to sell it as I never get to ride it and can't afford to pay insurance on something I don't use. It's a shame because it's a hell of a bike.

Yeah, that's a lesson those of us who started out with British iron have built in. Check everything that can move because it most likely will have. Hope it didn't land on your foot.

Did you buy your Ducati new, Sportbikecalgary? Is it true that the maintainence on Ducs is crazy expensive? I see you have plenty of confidence in deserted Alberta highways...
Enjoy your new ride, Gerhard! I'm surprised you even have time to post.

I did roll the bike of the showroom floor and have just over 52k km on it now. I know for the high milers on here the 52k in 9 years isn't that much but it's not my only bike. I have a friend with a '04 St4s and he's got 85k kms on his. I think he gets a lot more vacation time than me. Everyone asks about maintenance... I find the maintenance to be about 25% higher than the cost of sticking a Japanese bike into the shop. Is it worth it? It goes fast enough to get thrown in jail and has hard bags. I never ever have to worry about the bike under-performing my expectations, the only limitation is occupying the seat. Whatever I toss at it, it takes with a grin. So yep it's worth it. Besides I don't know what I'd replace it with.

Not if you do it yourself. http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa372/Frank_Cook/0132.jpg
I lived in Elliot Lake in 1996 and bought a new 900SSCR from Brampton Cycle, which at 600km was my nearest Ducati dealer, and the cost of the first service included three motel stopovers. I had the bike for four years and she never saw the inside of a shop again as it was much much easier to do my own maintenance. Even oil changes became reasonably priced after I realised that the full synthetic didn`t have to be Motul and the filter needn`t have DUCATI printed on it.

That and an investment in some DECENT tools will pay you dividends for years to come. If you have the spot for it it will give you something to do in the winters too.
Re. the tools. Canadian Tire's Master Craft line would be the MINIMUM quality you should consider. They don't need to be snap-on but good tools will save you far more than they initially cost.
Just in case it hadn't occurred to you, your first tools should duplicate everything the motorcycle came with, only get better quality combination wrenches and socket wrenches of the same size. Find a ratchet that feels right to you and if you have a spin-on oil filter get a good quality oil filter wrench. Avoid strap wrenches, they will just crush the filter and make a mess. Find a spark plug socket with a foamy insert. Breaking a spark plug is always annoying.

Thanks Black Lightening. Sounds like you do a lot of your own maintainence. Have you always? Duplicating the tools the bike came with, with a higher quality set is a great idea. That and finding out what they're all for!

I got my first Motorcycle in the 1960s and it was British. I also lived some distance away from any sort of motorcycle shop. I have done maintenance on my own machines since then, other than warranty stuff. If there is a maintenance course you can take locally then it is a good idea. It will make the learning curve that much easier to climb. since we are in teh photo section it looked like this one.

Other than tire changes (I take the wheel in), I, like Black Lightning, haven't taken a bike to a mechanic since the 60's. Buy the shop manual and follow instructions, if you need help most makes have a forum you can join. If you ask a question wait for a while, weigh the responses carefully before following advice, because like Abe Lincoln said "you can't trust everything that you read on the internet".

Alas no. I do know a chap who still has every bike he ever bought. Last count it was 8 motorcycles ranging from a BSA lightning to a Triumph Sprint ST. As I remember he had a Honda K model from about 1971, a later 1970s Kawasaki 750 vertical twin, one or two BMWs from the 1980s and a mid 1990s Honda Gold Wing. I forget what else he has. He bought them all new too.
