    Searching out stuff on google

Is it just me or is anyone else finding that looking for information on google is just turning up ads trying to sell you stuff, or worse yet, sites that list other sites that are just trying to sell stuff? This is getting old really fast.

It's become all about the mighty dollar, unfortunately.

The first few hits from a Google search are typically paid ads. They're in a pale yellow box that is so pale that I can only see it when viewing the screen at a certain angle. I think we have to expect some of this; Google, as with any commercial internet website, needs to generate income somehow. In exchange for be able to search carefully documented websites the world over, we have to put up with some paid advertisements. Fair enough by my estimation.

The trick with using a search engine is remembering the old adage "garbage in, garbage out." That means you need to fine tune the keywords you use for a search. Too vague a request and you'll be flooded with endless flotsam that has little to do with what you wanted. Conversely, if you plug in hyper-specific keywords you'll be disappointed with the lack of results. And don't forget to use Google's Advanced Search Tools that are listed in the left margin. Specifying a region or a date range can dramatically improve your results.

I don't object to advertising per se but when you want some information and all you get are ads it is annoying. What I also find annoying is when I put quotes in my search term and, if they don't find anything, they ignore the quotes and fill the screen with dreck. If I wanted search results without quotes I wouldn't have put them in. I realize I am getting old and cranky but still......

I will pay closer attention to the advanced search options from now on.
