    Anyone own a future classic?

    The Rocket Goldstar in this month`s issue of MMM had me wondering what it takes to recognise a future classic motorcycle and what in fact gives a bike classic status. BSA`s RGS has it in spades as does it`s stablemate the 500 Goldie and so does Kawasaki`s Eddy Lawson Replica but the bikes in themselves are very different.
    So who has a goldmine in the garage.

    No goldmine, just two money pits in my garage. Of course, if you hang onto anything long enough, it will eventually become a desirable collectible.

    I guess since they don't make them any more my Buell might qualify. Of course since I own it most likely it will just get ridden into the ground.

    BL, you could do what I did with (one of) my Norton Commando: rode it hard for twenty years then did a frame-up restoration and sold it for a lot of ca$h (although it would bring a lot more today).

    I think that Buell's will most definitely be future classics. I wouldn't mind owning one today, they always appealed to me as a good use for an HD engine. Kind of like thumbing your nose at the purist Harley rider. A good thumb of the nose always appeals to me!

    Ah, but Buell motorcycles are still being made, just no longer under the Harley-Davidson umbrella. And the 1190RS is a real stunner.

    I sold mine many years ago. Had a 1969 BSA A65 650 Lightning back in the late seventies and sold it to a friend who kept it for several more years. Once it developed some internal engine problems he sold it to a guy who had the time, skills and money to do a full restoration.

    I don't see my current ride ever being considered a classic, even 20 to 30 years from now.

    The problem with the 1190RS is that they cost twice as much as I paid for my first house. Ah well, if the lotto-max retirement fund ever comes across perhaps I can afford one.

    So does a fully loaded Honda Accord.

    It's all relative anyway. Motorcycle prices when you bought your $20,000 house weren't anywhere near what they are today - assuming of course that you bought you first house many decades ago and that you're not talking about a garden shed in the woods you bought a few years ago.
