    Ride To The Corduroy

Here's my opportunity to use this new venue to get some news out to everyone. As a senior gentleman (old geezer) who once rode many Enduros, including the Corduroy, I've been asked to run the event below and lead a group of riders on an interesting ride finishing up at the 2011 Cord site in Gooderham. All the information is below. Hope everyone can come. It should be a good day, especially with two time world MX champion Jeff Smith, aka Smitty, there to take us on a nostalgic trip through motorcycle history.

Sounds very cool; I'm going to keep it in mind, but I wasn't clear on one point. Is this ride on or off road?

I've clarified the type of riding by modifying the title. It's definitely a road ride and we will be leaving from GP Bikes new location in Whitby. We will have a pickup truck as a sweeper.....and no derogatory remarks about which brand may need this service. LOL

Well, how was the Corduroy this year? Looks like you would have had pretty decent weather.

We had a grand total of five riders which included myself. The weather looked like it was going to be bad and the weatherman concurred. They were both wrong. We had a fantastic ride and I had the opportunity to meet and talk with my old nemeses, Jeff Smith, two time world motocross champion. At 77 years old he rode the Cord on a 35 year old CanAm. They don't make em like they used to!

We took back roads all the way from GP Bikes in Whitby to Omemee, Ennismore, Buckhorn, and the legenday 507. Stopped on the return trip for some fresh picked corn and had a great supper afterward. All in all it was a grand day and a great ride. Hopefully next year we will have a better turnout.

I actually got my motorcycle licence using a friend's Can-Am, I think it was a 250 TNT. I was talking to Lawrence Hacking today who is over the moon with an ultra-rare Jawa that he just picked up; it has such a storied history that I'm hoping we can use it for a future article in the magazine.

I had a brand new Jawa 350 Gelandasport in 1975. I sold it because we had started a family and I wasn't riding it enough to justify keeping it. They were quite a bike back in the day. I rode the ISDT in 1973 on a stock Yamaha RT 360 and missed a gold medal by one checkpoint ( the electrical shorted out and I had to fix it in the rain in the forest) I won a silver medal and I owe some of that to the Jawa Team from Czechoslovakia. I was sanwiched amongst their team and the Factory BMW team. I just made sure that none of them passed me and it worked well. Over 1200 miles through the bush of Vermont, New York, and Massachustts, and in six days. Pheeeeewwwww!
